On March 10, 2026, the Nursing Practice Center Berlin (PPZ Berlin) welcomed students from Palm Beach State College (USA) for a professional exchange. The aim was to provide insights into current developments in nursing research as well as digital technologies in care delivery. Following an introduction by Prof. Dr. Nils Lahmann, participants received an overview of trends in digitalization and the use of innovative technologies. Practical demonstrations included solutions for digital continence care, systems for early detection of pressure ulcers, and exoskeletons. The students showed great interest and took the opportunity for in-depth discussions on international perspectives in nursing practice, research, and education.<\/p>\n<\/div>

On February 24, a team from PPZ Berlin traveled to Anklam to visit our practice partner, Ambulanter Pflegedienst Martina Baltz GmbH. The visit was intended to strengthen the foundation of our collaboration and gain a deeper understanding of nursing care practices on-site.<\/p>\n

On February 25, we gained comprehensive insights into various areas of care through a work shadowing experience. The nursing staff took us through their daily work routines and allowed us to experience different nursing settings up close. We accompanied outpatient service visits, visited day care centers, specialized outpatient palliative care facilities, and (intensive care) group homes, thereby gaining a very authentic impression of the processes and requirements in daily care with a view toward implementing technological innovations.<\/p>\n

We were particularly impressed by the openness and professionalism of the entire team. The nursing staff took the time to talk with us, explained their work processes, and gave us a firsthand look at their daily work. This close connection to the field is of great importance for our collaborative work.<\/p>\n

The visit demonstrated once again how valuable the close collaboration between nursing practice, our practice partners, and research is. We are very much looking forward to the next steps in implementing the technologies and to our continued joint development\u2014as well as to our next visit to Anklam.<\/p>\n<\/div>

On 23 January 2026, we were delighted to welcome the team from our practice partner, Ambulanter Pflegedienst Martina Baltz GmbH, to our offices in Berlin. This kick-off visit marks the official start of our joint collaboration on the cluster \u201cZukunft der Pflege\u201d project at the nursing practice centre Berlin (PPZ), with the aim of implementing technological innovations in nursing care practice in a participatory and sustainable manner.<\/p>\n

Meeting, exchanging ideas and experiencing technology<\/strong>
\nThe meeting began with the teams getting to know each other personally. The cluster \u201cZukunft der Pflege\u201d project was then presented. During the practical session, care technologies were demonstrated, and colleagues from the partner practice had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with, test and try out various technologies. This was followed by a highly intensive professional discussion on existing challenges in outpatient care and potential technological solutions.<\/p>\n

Outlook: Implementation in Anklam<\/strong>
\nA key topic of the meeting was the future implementation of the technologies selected by the partner practice within the care service setting in Anklam. Together, concrete steps were outlined on how appropriate solutions can be implemented in a practical manner and gradually integrated into work processes.<\/p>\n

We are delighted with the successful start to the project and the dedicated collaboration with all our colleagues at our partner practice. The high level of motivation and commitment shown by the entire team is particularly noteworthy.<\/p>\n

Report on the 8th Conference on the Future of Care\n\n<\/h2>

On 3<\/strong> and 4 March 2026<\/strong>, the 8th \u2018Future of Care\u2019 conference<\/strong> took place at the Georg Simon Ohm University of Applied Sciences in Nuremberg<\/strong>. Organised by the Nuremberg Nursing Practice Centre<\/strong>, it brought together around 250 participants<\/strong> from the fields of care practice, science, politics and industry. With over 90 scientific submissions and eleven exhibitors, the conference confirmed its importance as a central platform for exchange, knowledge transfer and networking.<\/p>\n

Under the motto \u2018Digital Transformation \u2013 Smart, Secure, Confident\u2019<\/strong> the conference focused on the opportunities and challenges of digital technologies in nursing. Topics included telecare, artificial intelligence, robotics, fall prevention, skills development, financing, data protection and ethical issues. The aim was to identify specific needs and develop practical solutions.<\/p>\n

The varied programme of workshops, short paper sessions, poster exhibitions, innovation competitions and networking formats offered numerous opportunities for dialogue and cooperation. Experts from various fields discussed how digital innovations can be integrated into care in an evidence-based, safe and practical manner.<\/p>\n

The conference made it clear that the digital transformation of care can only succeed if technological, organisational, qualification and ethical aspects are considered together. The results will be incorporated into the further work of the \u2018Future of Care\u2019 cluster funded by the BMFTR.<\/p>\n

The 9th conference will take place on 13 and 14 April 2027 in Hanover.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Press conference on Pro Care 2026 at the Nursing Practice Centre in Hanover\n\n<\/h2>

At the beginning of February, the press conference for Pro Care 2026 took place in the experimental room of the Nursing Practice Centre in Hanover. The event was held again on 10 and 11 February in Hanover and was once more a great success.<\/p>\n

Representatives from politics, nursing practice, science and business discussed key issues relating to the future of professional nursing. Heike Grosch, project manager of Pro Care, emphasised the strategic importance of the trade fair as a platform for networking, innovation and visibility of the nursing profession. As in the previous year, political patronage was provided by Lower Saxony’s Minister for Social Affairs, Labour, Health and Equality, Dr Andreas Philippi, who particularly highlighted the state-funded use of digital technologies of the future.<\/p>\n

Dr Regina Schmeer-Oetjen, project manager of the Nursing Practice Centre Hannover at the MHH, presented the \u2018Future of Nursing\u2019 cluster funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space. Here, technologies are being developed and tested that are intended to relieve the burden on nursing professionals and ensure high-quality care even as demand increases. Martin von Berswoldt-Wallrabe from the Federal Association of Private Social Service Providers provided an economic policy perspective, presenting key topics from the \u2018Caring for the Future\u2019 conference.<\/p>\n

Antje Heubeck, managing director of the B\u00e4renstark paediatric care service in Hanover, provided practical insights into the special requirements of outpatient intensive care for children and adolescents. The MHH executive committee also visited the exhibition to learn about the technologies on display. The get-together that followed gave rise to lots of interesting chats and new contacts. The solutions presented in the experiment room could also be seen at Pro Care 2026 in Hall 7 at the stand of the \u2018Future of Care\u2019 research cluster.<\/p>\n

Current developments in the digital transformation of care were discussed in an exchange with stakeholders from practice, administration and research. Innovation in dialogue: The Future of Care cluster at Pro Care 2026\n\n<\/h2>

With 6,600 visitors and around 250 exhibitors, Pro Care 2026 in Hanover confirmed its importance for the care industry and demonstrated the strong influence of digital and AI-supported solutions. The \u2018Cluster Future of Care\u2019 was represented by the Care Practices Centre Hanover, the PPZ Freiburg and Berlin, and the PIZ Oldenburg on a 105 m\u00b2 stand and received a great response: many nursing professionals and trainees exchanged ideas and tested innovations directly on site.<\/p>\n

One highlight was the humanoid robot AMECA, while other innovations that attracted interest included a digital dental camera, cold plasma technology for hand and wound disinfection, an anti-decubitus mattress, VR applications and an exoskeleton; the main topics of discussion were acceptance and practicality. The stand attracted political attention with a visit from Dr Andreas Philippi, and Sat.1 also reported on the trade fair. The focus was on questions about the role of science and the transfer of nursing science findings into practice. Overall, Pro Care was above all a place of dialogue for the cluster, providing new contacts and impetus for sustainable nursing practice.<\/p>\n

On 12 March 2026, the Geriatrics Research Group \u2013 Nursing Research Working Group at Charit\u00e9 \u2013 Universit\u00e4tsmedizin Berlin, together with the Higher Education Nursing Education Section of the German Society for Nursing Science, will host the 2nd D-A-CH Exchange. Entitled \u2018University Nursing Education \u2013 Standardisation in Competence and Practice Development,\u2019 the event will once again facilitate professional dialogue between experts from academia and practice in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.<\/p>\n

The Future of Nursing Cluster will participate with several workshops and specialist presentations, and will also present its position paper \u2018Strengthening Digital Competences \u2013 Impulses from the Future of Nursing Cluster.\u2019 The cluster is thus making a significant contribution to the content and technical design of the event. As part of the internal meeting of the Cluster \u201cZukunft der Pflege\u201d<\/strong>, partners of all five locations came together to further advance the integration of modern care technologies. The aim is to noticeably reduce the daily workload in care and improve the quality of care<\/strong> in the long term.<\/p>\n

One focus was on the development of technology-supported care pathways<\/strong> that will provide targeted support to nursing staff in the future. In addition, measures for skills development<\/strong> and strategies for effective knowledge transfer<\/strong> were developed so that new solutions can be put into practice. The BMFTR invited selected research institutions to present their developments and visions for the future in an exhibition. During the Chancellor’s tour, OFFIS presented its exhibit \u2018Humanoid Robotics for Care\u2019 and showed Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Research Minister Dorothee\u00a0B\u00e4r, EU Commissioner Ekaterina Zachariewa and other representatives from politics, science and industry how AI-supported robotics can support caregivers. Live demonstrations showed assistance with routine tasks, the imitation of symptoms for training purposes and social interaction. The presentation underlined the importance of AI and robotics for the future of care.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Review: Successful Barcamp on Care and Technology\n\n<\/h2>

The „Care & Technology“ Barcamp was a resounding success and demonstrated how exciting open exchange in this field can be. The goal of the event was to bring together interested practitioners and researchers. The result was a day full of inspiration, discussions, and new contacts.
\nSeveral sessions took place in parallel in four time slots. This resulted in a wide variety of topics: The focus was on questions surrounding digital skills and the use of artificial intelligence in nursing, the active participation of professionals, clients, and relatives in innovation processes, and methods for evaluating new technologies. Critical aspects were also discussed \u2013 such as the potential risks of deprofessionalization through automation or the question of how technological solutions can be tested for meaningful and practical suitability. Ethical considerations, including responsibility, transparency, and the protection of sensitive data, were also addressed.
\nWhat was special about the Barcamp format was that participants could contribute their own topics and actively shape the sessions. This created an open and lively atmosphere in which knowledge was not only shared but also developed together.
\nIn addition to the professional input, the Barcamp offered numerous opportunities for networking. New contacts, collaborations, and ideas developed between sessions, during breaks, and at the closing plenary session. Thus, the Barcamp was not only a place for exchange, but also a starting point for further collaboration.
\nIt became clear: healthcare and technology are best developed together. The Barcamp demonstrated the great potential when diverse perspectives come together and provided important impetus for the future.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Integrating Reflection on Digital Care Technologies into Nursing Education\n\n<\/h2>

Implementing digital technologies in nursing care requires more than just technical skills. While the use of technological systems offers great potential, it also brings risks and challenges-particularly in the areas of technology, organization, ethics, and social dynamics.
\nIn the dual study program Health and Nursing<\/em> at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences Mainz-which leads to the professional qualification as a nurse and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing-this reflective competence was specifically promoted. Over 60 students participated in a workshop organized by the Catholic University of Applied Sciences Mainz in cooperation with the Nursing Practice Centre Freiburg and the \u201eInstitut Mensch, Technik und Teilhabe\u201c at Furtwangen University.
\nThe event was based on a structured evaluation approach: the guideline for reflecting on and assessing digital technologies in acute inpatient care, as well as the ethical reflection tool FreTip<\/em>. In small groups, students examined three example nursing technologies:<\/p>\n
