At the Future Care Lab of the Institute for People, Technology and Participation at Furtwangen University – a project partner of the Nursing Practice Centre Freiburg – students gain practical experience with innovative care concepts as part of their degree programme. At the same time, visitors have the opportunity to experience first-hand, through guided tours and workshops, how future technologies are being researched, tested and further developed.

The Future Care Lab is an interdisciplinary space for research, testing and exchange centred on innovative assistance systems and digital services in care. Here, ideas are developed in collaboration with users, tested in realistic scenarios and assessed for their practical applicability. By bringing together science, technology and care practice, the laboratory creates a unique space in which to bring future care perspectives to life and to explore them further together.

Care homes, educational institutions, professional and informal carers, as well as members of the public with an interest in the subject, have the opportunity at the PPZ Nuremberg to experience digital innovations and technical developments first-hand – in a safe environment and with expert guidance. In the experimentation room, technologies are not only presented but also critically examined in interactive workshops. The SkillsLab enables participants to practise rare and challenging care procedures routinely, thereby increasing safety in everyday life. The PPZ Berlin’s real-world laboratory is being developed in stages as a hybrid space combining a showroom and a simulation facility. Here, innovative technologies – ranging from robotics to telehealth – can be tested, real-world scenarios simulated and spaces for reflection utilised. Together, we are developing new solutions for healthcare. We welcome international audiences from all sectors – from healthcare professionals, students and lecturers to management staff, people in need of care, and their families and carers. Whether through guided tours, workshops or events, the real-world laboratory brings the future of care and healthcare to life and opens up new perspectives for integrated care.

The PIZ’s real-world laboratories provide an excellent environment for user studies. The prototypes allow for intensive testing, thereby fostering close collaboration between older people, medical professionals and carers on the one hand, and developers and technicians on the other. The IDEAAL flat is a fully functional flat and serves as a laboratory for home care. The CARL care home laboratory is modelled on a typical care room in a care home. The LIFE intensive care laboratory simulates a typical single room in an intensive care unit, complete with its specific conditions. The Care Services Centre is a hybrid of a staff room and the office of the outpatient care service. The MiRaCle laboratory offers a fully equipped facility for research in the fields of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).
